Key Tax Deadlines for Businesses in January 2026

As January 2026 approaches, it’s crucial for businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen to keep an eye on important tax deadlines to maintain compliance and avoid penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Tax Deposit Due

Attention employers: If you’re governed by the monthly deposit rules, your deposit of Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for December 2025 is due on January 15. This date also marks the deadline for nonpayroll withholding deposits, applicable if the monthly deposit rule pertains to you. Remember, employment tax deposits must be made electronically, although employers with a deposit liability under $2,500 per return period can opt to remit payments quarterly or annually with the return.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen

Use Form 1040-ES to pay your estimated tax for 2025 by January 15. You have until April 15 to file your 2025 income tax return using Form 1040 or 1040-SR. Failing to pay estimated tax by this deadline necessitates filing your 2025 return and settling any taxes due by March 2, 2026, to dodge an estimated tax penalty.

Handling Weekends & Holidays

Tax deadlines that fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday will push the due date to the next business day that is not a holiday.
