Crucial October 2025 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As autumn unfolds, business owners are met with essential tax obligations that demand attention. From corporate tax filings and payroll deposits to retirement account contributions, ensuring timely compliance is crucial to avoid penalties. Here’s a comprehensive guide to October’s critical tax deadlines.

October 15 - Corporate Tax Filings
For corporations operating on a 2024 calendar year, October 15 marks the deadline to file income tax returns using Form 1120. This applies to those who filed for a 6-month extension by April 15. Ensure all taxes, interest, and applicable penalties are settled by this date.

October 15 - Payroll and Nonpayroll Tax Deposits
Employers adhering to monthly deposit guidelines must deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for September 2025 by October 15. For nonpayroll withholdings, the same deadline applies under similar monthly deposit rules.

October 15 - Keogh Accounts and Contributions
Self-employed individuals who extended their 2023 tax return have until October 15, 2025, to establish a Keogh Retirement Account for 2024 contributions. Additionally, contributions to SEP IRAs or Keogh plans for the year 2024 must be made by this date if extended.

October 31 - Quarterly Tax Filings and Deposits
Third quarter Form 941 for 2025 is due, alongside any remaining undeposited tax. If total tax liability is under $2,500, payment can be made in full with the timely filed return. Deposit by October 31; those compliant with full, timely deposits have until November 10.

October 31 - Specialized Deposits for Small Employers
Small employers with a yearly tax liability of $2,500 or more must deposit any outstanding taxes by October 31 if the third quarter liability remains under $2,500. Similarly, address any owed Federal Unemployment Tax exceeding $500 by the same date.

Weekends and Holidays Considerations
If a provided due date falls on a legal holiday or weekend, expect an extension to the next operational business day.

Extensions for Disaster Areas
Regions designated as disaster areas may benefit from filing extensions. For confirmation and additional details, refer to FEMA’s Disaster Declarations and the IRS Tax Relief page.
